By Car Hiring or renting a car is one of the most inexpensive ways to travel in the UK especially if it's last minute weekend travel. Moreover, the country side in the united kingdom is most enjoyed when driving. That said, you may want to avoid this during winter. The best thing about hiring or renting a car is leaving it at your destination. For example, you would like to spend a week in Manchester and you live in London. Rent a car to drive to Manchester. You have an option to leave the car at the car rental service's branch office in Manchester. Dont worry about returning it to London. You can hire another car on your way back. It's that easy. It is nice to book your car 2 weeks in advance. However, cars are generally available for hire couple of days before you travel or even on the day of your travel if you are very lucky. Compared to the rest of Europe, I think UK's transport system is one of the most expensive. Hot tip: Book in advance, save money wherever possible.
