Transport - UK

Places in the UK are very well connected by public transport, be it - flight, train or bus services. It has one of the most efficient services in Europe.

If you know your starting point and the destination, it is worthwhile to look at the Traveline website - http://www.traveline.org.uk

Just type in the postcode or place, station or bus stop of your starting point and destination. The website comes up with a timetable and various travel options / connections available during that time. It will also tell you if you have to walk to reach your destination. That's the first website I lookup when I plan my travel.

By Air

Most of the major cities in the UK are covered by local flights. Some of the prominent are

British Airways

EasyJet

RyanAir

You can also book your airport parking online and save upto 60% on the standard parking charges. Check out -> here

By Train

United kingdom which is made up of England, Wales, Scotland are very well connected by various train operators. The rail services are privatised, but controlled under one roof National Rail.

You will be able to plan your journey and also book your tickets online. All the train operators have online booking facility on their website. However, you can also book online at

TRAINLINE

Railcards are a good way to save money on train travel, especially if you are a frequent traveller. Check out http://www.railcard.co.uk/ for a railcard that suits you.

If you are travelling daily for work purposes, you may want to buy season tickets / pass which is available for 1 week, month and / or 3 months (check this out at your local station).

Book in advance to save money on your train tickets.

Check out the National Rail website for information on ticket types which could save you money.

Trust me, train travel can be very expensive if you do not plan in advance (except some short journeys).

By Car

Hiring or renting a car is one of the most inexpensive ways to travel in the UK especially if it's last minute weekend travel. Moreover, the country side in the united kingdom is most enjoyed when driving. That said, you may want to avoid this during winter.

The best thing about hiring or renting a car is leaving it at your destination. For example, you would like to spend a week in Manchester and you live in London. Rent a car to drive to Manchester. You have an option to leave the car at the car rental service's branch office in Manchester. Dont worry about returning it to London. You can hire another car on your way back. It's that easy. It is nice to book your car 2 weeks in advance. However, cars are generally available for hire couple of days before you travel or even on the day of your travel if you are very lucky.
